I got a letter from the state yesterday telling me that I have to start paying unemployment tax. I imagine someone might laugh at me for complaining, but here’s the deal. I haven’t had an unemployment claim in over ten years, yet my account has a balance of several thousand dollars. I called to see if there was any chance to appeal this new tax. The official response from the nice lady whose salary I pay with other taxes? Wait for it….
“Be thankful it isn’t worse.”
During the course of our conversation, she mentioned that the state’s unemployment fund is $2 Billion in the red, which is obviously the real reason my rate was adjusted. So, there’s no way the state is going to continue to let me off the hook, despite the fact that I HAVEN’T HAD A CLAIM IN OVER TEN YEARS.
Four businesses in our little town have closed down in the past two months. I expect more of the same before this mess is over. When the government nickels and dimes small businesses, they close. It’s the nickels and dimes that we’re trying to save to make a living.
I’m thankful it isn’t worse.
