I went to Cataloochee to take some pictures of the elk and just to enjoy being there. It’s one of the most peaceful places I know. There were about two dozen elk in a field that I wanted to try to capture in a shot. Usually, they are spread out more and it’s hard to get more than a few in one picture. I was east of them, so I walked around to get the setting sun behind me. Unfortunately, there is a creek that runs along the edge of the field, and I couldn’t find any place I wanted to cross. There were a couple of trees bridging the stream, but I really didn’t want to fall in, so I stayed on my side.
Common sense, and numerous signs, tell you to not approach wildlife. They approached me. The elk began to move across the stream and into the wide open field to graze, as I was trying to decide whether or not to cross the stream. I didn’t want to startle them, so I sat down and several wandered by, including this one.
